Awarded in 2024, the San Andreas East Fuel Break is funded by CAL FIRE’s Wildfire Prevention Program. This project is a 160 acre, 2.5 mile long fuel break directly north of San Andreas. This project will consist of a 500-ft wide shaded fuel break following a ridgeline from Gold Strike Rd to Mountain Ranch Road near Mills Ave.

San Andreas East was designed to protect the homes, businesses, schools, medical centers and government buildings threatened in San Andreas during the Butte Fire in 2015. Treatments will include a combination of mastication,

handwork, chipping and/or prescribed grazing. These treatment methods will result in a shaded fuel break that could serve as an ideal staging area for fire personnel in the event of a future fire.

Project Points

• Treatments will be provided completely free of cost to participating landowners
• Calaveras County RCD will be responsible for contracting and organizing all fuel reduction treatments
• Treatments will be chosen based on prescriptions created by a Registered Professional Forester or Certified Range Manager and with final approval by landowner
• Treatments (apart from prescribed grazing) will only occur when it is deemed that there is limited fire threat, such out of fire season. No work will occur on Red Flag Days.
• Properties will ultimately be selected to receive treatments based on the following criteria: A) willingness of landowner to participate, B) comparative need based on existing fuel load, and C) proximity to adjacent participating landowners for efficient implementation
• All activities related to the project will be completed by March 2031
